Tea is the fourth largest export crop in Tanzania and Tanzania’s fourth major tea producer in Africa. In the fiscal year 2019/2020, tea contributed US$ 60 million to export earning, equivalent to 6.5% of total export revenue. By 2018, the production of dry tea leaves in Tanzania was about 65,000 metric tons (MT).
Tea production is dominated by the small-scale farmer coupled with four large estates. The tea industry directly employs about 50,000 people along the value chain while about 2 million Tanzanians are indirectly employed along the value chain.
